Rockstar Games has officially announced free current-gen console upgrades for Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online.
Starting on Thursday, June 18, 2026, players who own a digital or physical copy of GTA 5 on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can claim the native PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S version entirely for free.
Key Details of the PromotionEligible Platforms: Players moving from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S.
Seamless Migration: Last-gen players can fully transfer their Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters straight to their current-gen console via a one-time migration.
PC Enhancements: Alongside this console offer, PC players who own the legacy edition of the game can also jump to the Enhanced version at no extra charge.

By upgrading, players gain immediate access to major improvements that were previously locked behind a paid current-gen version:Expanded visual settings featuring up to 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and ray tracing support.

The Strategy Behind the Move
This promotion follows a trend from earlier in the year when Rockstar made the PC Enhanced update free for existing users. Industry analysts and community discussions point out that this is a deliberate push by Rockstar Games to consolidate its active player base onto modern platforms.
